DIGGING FOR BURIED TREASURE
MEN dig underground, too, in their search for the buried treasure we
we should see something like this. In long tunnels strengthened with|
miners and the ponies which draw the coal-tubs go down the mine in

call coal. If we could cut down through a coal-mine with a giant knife,
‘stout wooden beams, men are working with picks and drills. The
big lifts. Most mines are deeper than this and have more tunnels,
9INSIDE A FIERY MOUNTAIN
STILL deeper even than the
deepest mine, the earth is
very hot, so hot that the
rocks are molten and some-
times boil over through
the great funnels, or craters,
of volcanoes. If we could cut
through a volcano at such a mo-
ment it would look like this, with
molten rock called lava pouring
down its sides and red-hot cinders
shooting high into the air.

t7.The
Lonely
House that
Stands in the Sea
ONE of the most exciting houses men live in is the lighthouse,
which stands like a tall tower on a lonely rock in the ocean. It
is built high so that its light may shine far out over the sea at
night and warn the ships away from dangerous rocks. It is
built stout and strong on solid rock so that it will stand firm
against the wildest winds and heaviest seas. In this narrow
house all the rooms are placed one on top of the other and
connected by a spiral staircase. First, just above the tank which
stores fresh water, is the entrance-room which is reached by
steps leading up the rock. Then come rooms for storing food,
rooms where oil is stored for the lamp, a living-room, a bed-
room and the working-rooms. Right at the top is the great
light which the men must keep shining brightly every night.

The Paper House
which the Wasps Build
SOME wasps build their nests under the eaves of a
house. First the queen wasp grinds tiny scraps of
wood between her jaws into stuff called “wasp-paper”.
With this she makes a pillar, hanging from the roof,
and adds to it a round platform with many thimble-
shaped cells beneath it where she lays her eggs. She
adds a balloon-shaped covering to complete the nest.
As the eggs hatch, the new wasps add more platforms,
take off the old covering, and make a larger new one.

How the Wind is
used to Raise Water

IN Holland much of the land is below the level
of the sea, and water must often be raised to sea-
level so that it can flow away, or the land would
be flooded. Here is a mill which uses the wind’s
strength for raising the water. As the wind blows
the mill-sails round, they turn a huge slotted
axle which reaches almost to the bottom of the
mill. There the axle turns a large wheel which
has scoops fixed to its rim. As this wheel turns,
the scoops lift the water to the higher level.

THE PYRAMID WHICH HAS STOOD 5,000 YEARS
WHEN a king of ancient Egypt
died, his treasures were placed
beside him in a huge tomb called
a pyramid. A narrow passage
near the bottom and a large
sloping hall led up to the burial
chamber, which had several ceil-
ings one above another. More
passages led to other chambers,
perhaps to lead robbers away
from the treasure. Halfway
up this pyramid are two
air shafts, too narrow to
enter. The rest is solid.

=INSIDE THE DEEP SEA
To go exploring in the deep sea, men use
a large steel ball with thick glass windows,
called a diving chamber. This is lowered
from a ship by a strong steel cable. A
smaller cable carries electricity for the light
and telephone which are used inside the ball.

The Wonderful
Thing that Happens
inside an Egg
ALL the time a hen sits
over her eggs and keeps
them warm, a wonderful
change is taking place
inside each egg. At first
it is simply an ordinary
egg with a speck in it.
Soon the speck develops
into the beginning of
a tiny body, with two
28
sets of vein-like vessels
leading from it, one
to the yolk and the
other round the inside
of the shell.
Through the set which
goes round the yolk,
the growing chick takes
in all its food. The
other set, just inside the
shell, is used to supply
air and to get rid of
waste. In time, when
the chick has used all
the food, it breaks the
shell and begins life in
the world outside.
