Whena tall ship wants to pass under London’s famous Tower Bridge,
to make way for it. Each arm works like a lever, balanced by a heavy

, the bridge is cleared of traffic and the road lifts up in two mighty arms

see numbers of brown wings

the sycamore tree. At the end
of each wing is a seed. When a
gust of wind comes, the wings carry
the seeds away to the open ground.
and Parachutes
Dandelion seeds
are attached to
small feathery
parachutes. The
lightest breeze
will whisk these
parachutes some
way before they
fall. That is why
dandelions
seem to grow
everywhere.The Wonderful Birth
of the Dragonfly
The egg
of the dragonfly
rests under water.
In time
a tiny spider-like
nymph hatches out.
All winter
the nymph
grows steadily,
living in the water.
When the summer comes
it climbs a plant-stem
into the fresh air.Soon its skin splits,
and out comes
the head of
a dragonfly.
The

dragonfly
wriggles itself
free of its old |
winter coat,
pauses
to stretch
its lovely
wings,
and flies up
imto the summer sunshine.SHADOWS THAT FALL ON THE EARTH
The sun’s light travels in straight lines, and cannot pass through
solid objects. If a tree, or a balloon, or a cloud comes between
the sun and the earth, a dark shadow falls on the ground. When
the moon comes between the sun and the earth, it casts a huge
shadow on the earth and hides the sun for a time. This is
called an eclipse of the sun. When we see an eclipse of the
moon, the earth has come between the sun and the moon. Its
shadow has fallen on the moon and darkened it.

\\The rain falls on the dry hills. The spring does not flow.
The water is soaking into the soft soil at the top of the hill and 1
has begun to collect above the layer of hard earth further down.

16SLOW BIRTH OF
\L WE BURN
In spring and summer the greenhouse traps the warmth from
the sun and becomes hot. We can grow tropical plants inside it.
18
THE WARM HOUSE WHERE THE FLOWERS LIVE
In winter we heat the greenhouse by a fire and hot-water pipes.
Flowers will bloom inside which the frost outside would kill.

The earth turns. The house enters the shadow, and it is dark.

The top gate is closed and the water is allowed to fall again.

The green centre of each flower swells.

At the bottom of this paper balloon is a hole, and under it is a
candle, held in place by a wire. When the boy lights the candle
the balloon quickly swells, and soon it rises high into the air.
26
How a Burning Candle
can Lift a Balloon
The air inside it has expanded through the heat and is lighter than
the air outside. When the candle burns past the wire and drops
away, the air inside cools. The balloon folds up and falls to earth.

This boy can. In the mirror which rests against the wall he
sees the girl on the other side. Why? Because the rays of light
which carry her picture are reflected by another mirror above. No text on this page.
