Future Books I: Overture

1946 :: FUTURE BOOKS :: MAGAZINE

Excerpt from the first issue of Future Books ("Overture", priced 5s. net) with Isotype charts on postwar economic questions. Charts cover net imports and exports of Great Britain and the Soviet Union in 1937, Soviet foreign trade with Britain and the USA in 1935 and 1938, the steps by which Soviet industry buys foreign equipment, and, for Denmark and the Danube countries, urban and rural population, railways and secondary roads, food production per agricultural worker, potential and used water power, infant deaths in 1938 and cross-sections of the Danube valley. Text pages discuss Soviet industrialisation and land reform in eastern Europe; at least one chart is credited to the Isotype Institute, and the water-power chart cites a P.E.P. broadsheet of July 1944.
